Kelantan: the land of the Dinar and the Dirham
An initial report from Malaysia
The use of the dinar and the dirham begins to spread in Muslim territories. The small frontier state of Kelantan, in the north of Malaysia, became on the 2nd of Ramadan of 1431, 12 August, 2010, in the first Muslim territory of the 21st century that admits the payment of the zakat by means of gold dinar and silver dirham.
Driving into the city of Kota Bharu, the capital of Kelantan, proceeding from the airport enormous signs by the side of road showing images of the gold coins and silver announce: "Kelantan, the land of the dinar and the dirham".
The second day of Ramadan, in an institutional event held at the Convention Hall of Kota Bharu the principal Minister of the federal State Dato Nik Abdul Aziz bin Nik Mat, a leader that studied in the Islamic University of Al Azhar in Cairo that speaks fluid Arabic, declared officially established in the state the public use of the "Islamic currency". This declaration means very much to this small state of Malaysia and to all the Muslims.
The persevering work of Sidi Umar Ibrahim Vadillo, as author, researcher, teacher and promoter of the Islamic monetary system, has produced tangible results in many fronts. His titanic efforts have seen materialized in a remarkable and historic success in Kelantan.
Rais Abu Bakr Rieger and Hajj Abdalhasib Castiņeira both were invited to speak during the ceremony. Hajj Abu Bakr Rieger expressed the support of the Muslims in the entire world and the enormous impact of this decision for the whole Ummah. Other speakers at the Launching Ceremony where Dr. Habib Dahinden, CEO of E-dinar Ltd., the producers of the coins, the chief Minister of the Sultanate of Sulu in the Southern Philippines, Pak Zaim Saidi, head of Wakala Nusantara that has been spreading Islamic currency in Indonesia with impressive success.

The government announced that Tabung Hajji admits saving deposits in gold coin and silver to pay for the pilgrimage to Mekka, and confirmed that Bank Islami accepts now saving accounts denominated in dinar and dirham. That was not all in this jubilant morning of Ramadan in Kelantan: machines of automatic vending where shown officially, especially designed to allow of a 1 dirham and 2 dirham coins of silver, developed in the University of Technology of Kuala Lumpur by a group of Nigerian students and the real-time WAP service with the information of the rate of the dinar and dirham on mobile telephone phone, which already operative was also demonstrated.
A panel with the daily quotation of the value of the Islamic currencies was inaugurated on the traditional market of the center of Kota Bharu, called Siiti Khadiyah Market.
Truly a complete dinar and dirham launching! Beyond doubt it was a blessed and joyful day, a day when the Islamic currency, dinar and dirham, has been implemented as means of payment, saving, exchange and safety of value, in accordance with the shariah of Islam.
This official launching was announced by the person in charge of Economy and Finance of the State, Dato Hajji Osma bin Musa, as the the first step towards a full Islamic Monetary System, that includes also a network of wakalas (agents of sale and exchange) and of wadias (safety deposits).
Dato Hosam affirmed: "The value of the Dinar and of the Dirham has been fixed by the Shariah, neither a bank nor a government can define it. Five years ago, when the Government of Kelantan accepted the dinar and the dirham in the first experimental phase, one dinar was rated at 360 Ringgits, today it sells at 582 Ringgits. Whoever does not believe in the value of this system must be blind."
During the event, a video - pre-recorded one day earlier - from Shaykh Abdalqadir as Sufi, addressing the gathering, was projected on huge screens. Attentively watched and listened to by the entire hall, Shaykh Abdalqadir conveyed his congratulations to the persons in charge of this initiative and to the head of the Government of Kelantan and encouraged them to continue ahead, and praised especially Sidi Umar Ibrahim Vadillo for his knowledge - without any hesitation the number one faqih of the Ummah in financial matters - and his tireless work of for almost 20 years.
