Dinar Dirham Market Day Festival in the Ministry of Finance, Indonesia

Baitul Mal Nusantara distributed as many as 135 Dirhams of zakat to the lower rank staffs of the Ministry.

Friday, July 6, 2012, at one side of the office of the Minister of Finance, Republic of Indonesia, adjacent to the Al Amin Mosque, not far from the Banteng Park (Wahidin St), Central Jakarta, a tent big enough to accommodate tens of merchants has been spread. Beneath it was ready about 50 merchants open their outlets. Some banners stretched here and there to inform people who are passing by about the 'Dirham Dinar Market Day Festival of Nusantara'. At about 8:00 AM, Mr. Abdarrahman Rachadi, Chairman of the Jawara (Dinar and Dirham Users Network of Nusantara), opened the market, with the Dinar and Dirham as its medium of exchange.

This Market Day Festival (MDF) was organized thanks to the hard work of Mrs. Itha Hendaryati, al Wakil of Wakala al Fadhilah, in cooperation with the Committee of Al Amin Mosque, which exist within the Ministry of Finance office. Other wakalas, present in the market helping as the market supervisor ( muhtasib), also participated and helped to operate Wakala in the market on that day.

After Jumah prayer Amir Zaim Saidi presented a lecture about the Dinar and Dirham and muamalat before tha jamaah of the mosque, mostly the officials and employee of the Ministry of Finance. The lectures and discussions lasted for about 90 minutes, and was appreciated by the audiences. Most of the questions raised by the audience were technical, and no one refused the the return to the gold dinar and silver dirham.

The merchants whom many of them were first comer to the event were very enthusiastic. So far, every time they attended any basar they are charged with expensive fee, whereas in the MDF there is no rent applied. Market is free. Transacting with silver dirham also gave them a very different experience.

As always, in any event of MDF, the Baitul Mal Nusantara (BMN) also distributed zakat. On this occasion, BMN has distributed total of 75 dirhams, in addition to the 35 dirhams zakat from Wakala Fadhilah and another 25 dirhams from the Islamic Committee of the Directorate of Tax Court, the Ministry of Finance. The zakat recipients are the people within the Ministry of Finance and around Masjid Al Amin, such as janitors, gardeners, parking man, and other lower rank field staffs.

'We hope to organize regular event here,' said one of the Committee Members of Al Amin mosque.
